IPL 2024: The Paisa Barbaad 11 of the Season – 109.15 Cr Waste
Glenn Maxwell, the worst performer of all as we look at the Paisa Barbaad 11 of the season for IPL 2024.
Another year and another successful season of the Indian Premier League comes to an end. After almost a decade, we witnessed the Kolkata Knight Riders winning an IPL Trophy, but for the third time after successfully defeating the Sunrisers Hyderabad in a one-sided final. KKR’s last successful attempt was in 2021, but the dream was short-lived with CSK winning that season.
While IPL has been quite successful in improving the global image of the game, one thing it is insanely famous for is the amount of money that flows during the tournament. Be it BCCI via Media or Sponsors, Teams via Sponsorship, or the players via salaries, there’s a huge chunk of money involved in the tournament.
Having said that, one thing that catches everyone’s attention every year is the Return on Investment for every player. Every year, teams spend huge amounts of money to buy players in the Auction. The year 2024 was actually the standout with two players getting the highest salary in the history of the IPL.
But how have the salaries transformed into performance for all players? Do we have players who took a salary of that of Messi or Ronaldo, but gave a performance like a local league player? Well, let’s analyze the performance of all players, and find out the Paisa Barbaad 11 of the season for IPL 2024.
Number 1 & 2 – Devdutt Padikkal (7.75 Cr) & Ishan Kishan (15.25 Cr)
Starting with the openers, two openers who failed to impress the most as compared to salary are Devdutt Padikkal and Ishan Kishan. While Padikkal gets a salary of 6.75 Cr, Kishan is almost double at 15.25 Cr. Talking about their performance, Padikkal had a horror performance with just 82 runs from 11 innings. Whereas Kishan may have more runs, if a player is getting 15 Cr as compensation, you don’t expect just a 300 runs series from him.
Number 3, 4 & 5 – Deepak Hooda (5.75 Cr), Glenn Maxwell (11 Cr) & Shimron Hetmyer (8.5 Cr)
Coming to the middle-order, we have Deepak Hooda from LSG, the worst of all, Glenn Maxwell from RCB, and Shimron Hetmyer from RR. None of these batters had a performance with remembering in a positive way. While Hooda scored 145 runs from 11 matches, Maxwell scored 52 runs from 10 matches, and Hetmyer scored 113 runs from 12 matches. While performance is actually horrible, their salary is so high that it actually feels like Paisa Barbaad.
Number 6 & 7 – Liam Livingstone (11.5 Cr) & Rovman Powell (7.4 Cr)
Talking about the finishers, Liam Livingstone with a salary of 11.5 Cr, and Rovman Powell with a salary of 7.4 Cr were the worst of all. When you are getting such a high salary, you do expect them to win you a few matches on their own. But neither of the two impressed with their performance. While Livingstone scored 111 runs from 7 matches, Powell scored 103 runs from 10 matches.
Number 8, 9, 10 & 11 – Spencer Johnson (10 Cr), Deepak Chahar (14 Cr), Alzarri Joseph (11.5 Cr) & Anrich Nortje (6.5 Cr)
Finally, talking about the bowlers, the ones with high salaries and low performance were Spencer Johnson from GT, Deepak Chahar from CSK, Alzarri Joseph from RCB, and Anrich Nortje from DC. All these four pacers take a heavy salary. While Spencer has a salary of 10 Cr, Deepak is at 14 Cr, Alzarri Joseph is at 11.5 Cr, and Anrich Nortje is at 6.5 Cr.
Seeing their high salaries, the performance given by them was extremely horrible. While Spencer played only 5 matches before getting dropped, he could only manage to take 4 wickets in that. A similar fate was Alzarri Joseph, who was also dropped after 3 matches after taking only 1 wicket. Deepak was another disappointment with 5 wickets from 8 games. Whereas Nortje does have 7 wickets from 6 matches, but that’s at an economy rate of 13.4.
