Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav to lead as we look at the final ODI and T20 squad list for India vs Sri Lanka 2024.

After a few days of brainstorming sessions, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) with support from the selector Ajit Agarkar and newly appointed Coach Gautam Gambhir has announced the official squad for Team India for the ODI and T20 series vs Sri Lanka. In the form of a new strategy that the team has adopted, the BCCI has adopted the ICC tournament structure by selecting only 15 players per squad. 

It’s a welcome change for the team as they are sticking to the universal 15-member squad that will help them adapt easily to the ICC tournament rules. What’s even more interesting is that the Gautam Gambhir effect is clearly visible given the choices that have been made under his leadership. While Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are playing the ODI series with Champions Trophy 2025 in hindsight, the T20 series shall see Suryakumar Yadav as the new heir. 

It’s a surprising, but not totally unexpected move by the team management. Hardik Pandya was the Vice captain in the absence of Rohit Sharma. But with Rohit gone, Hardik was expected to lead the side. But that’s not happening as BCCI has decided to make Suryakumar Yadav the new Captain and Shubman Gill the Vice Captain. While Hardik has been rested for the ODIs, it feels unlikely he would been the Vice Captain in ODIs too.

If we look at the T20 squad, to begin with, a lot of players who were a part of the Zimbabwe T20 series have been excluded. Four big players who did extremely well in the T20I series vs Zimbabwe, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Abhishek Sharma, Avesh Khan, and Mukesh Kumar have been dropped, and in their place, the management got in Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh, and Mohammed Siraj.

While the inclusion of SKY, Hardik, Arsh, and Siraj makes complete sense, the fact that Riyan Parag was selected ahead of Ruturaj and Abhishek feels a little surprising. Both Ruturaj and Abhishek deserved another opportunity, but guess Gauti has his own ideas of what players he wants in the team. In addition, the team has included Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel also in the squad. So, here’s the complete list of players for the India vs Sri Lanka 2024 T20 series.

Sri Lanka vs India 2024 ODI Squad breakup

Talking about the ODI squad, the team has decided to play the veteran duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli given the number of ODIs the team shall be playing ahead of Champions Trophy 2025. While Rohit and Virat are playing, the team shall be without three first-choice players, Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah. But what’s most surprising is the omission of Ravindra Jadeja, who seems to have been dropped from the squad. 

Compared to the squad that played in the ODI World Cup 2023, the main inclusion seems to be that of Rishabh Pant, who is making a comeback in the ODIs after a gap of more than 1.5 years. Alongside Pant, the team will see new names like Riyan Parag, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, and Washington Sundar. It’s a great opportunity for these four to make a mark in the absence of other star players. So, here’s the complete India vs Sri Lanka ODI series squad.

Talking about the India vs Sri Lanka T20 and ODI series schedule, the tour begins with the T20 series with three T20Is being played on July 27, July 28, and July 30. The timing shall be 7 pm IST, and all matches shall feature at Pallekele. The ODI series follows this with matches being played on August 2, August 4, and August 7. The timing shall be 2:30 pm IST, and matches shall feature in Colombo.
