ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Dream Team of the Tournament
Rohit Sharma to lead as we look at the combined dream team of the tournament for ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
It has been only a few days since the Indian team won the T20 World Cup, but it still feels surreal for the way the Indian team won the World Cup from an almost impossible position. South Africa needed 30 from 30 balls, and dangerous Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller were at the crease. Even as Bumrah’s two overs were pending, it looked done and dusted for the Indian team.
But as the saying goes, it isn’t over until it’s over. What followed next was the destined example of the same. Bumrah produced two magical spells, Hardik Pandya removed the dangerous Klaasen with a magical slower deliver, and Suryakumar Yadav took undoubtedly the best catch of the tournament to dismiss Miller. Everything fell into place for the Indian team as they scripted history to win an ICC tournament after a gap of 11 years.
But who were the architects of the Indian team for this memorable win, and which players performed excellently throughout the tournament? Well, let’s analyze the performance of all players, and find out the ICC Dream Team of the Tournament for T20 World Cup 2024. As much as possible, we will try to keep the players in their respective positions, and select at least 6 bowling options, a7 batting options.
Openers – Rahmanullah Gurbaz & Rohit Sharma
Starting with the best two openers, there have been plenty of key performers in this World Cup. There’s Travis Head from Australia, Quinton de Kock from South Africa, Ibrahim Zadran from Afghanistan, and Jos Buttler from Australia. But if we had to pick the best two openers, it would be Rahmanullah Gurbaz from Afghanistan and Rohit Sharma from India.
Both are not only the leading run-getters of this World Cup, but they also carried the batting for their respective teams on most of the occasions. While Gurbaz has 281 runs to his name, Rohit is marginally behind at 257 runs. Both have hit 3 fifties this season with useful runs in crucial matches. While Rohit has hit these runs at a strike rate of 156.7, Gurbaz has been a touch slower at 124.3.
Middle-order – Nicholas Pooran, Suryakumar Yadav & Marcus Stoinis
Coming to the middle-order, there wasn’t a lot of competition, so selecting the best three wasn’t much of an issue. To complement the batting of Rohit and Gurbaz, we have Nicholas Pooran at 3, Suryakumar Yadav at 4, and Marcus Stoinis at 5. All three have been the key performers for their respective teams in this World Cup. While Pooran has scored 228 runs from 7 innings, SKY has 199 runs from 8 innings, and Stoinis has 169 runs and 10 wickets to his name.
Finishers – Heinrich Klaasen & Hardik Pandya
Coming to the finishers, there were many contenders in this space in the form of Axar Patel, Andre Russell, Heinrich Klaasen, and Hardik Pandya. But if we had to select two from these, Heinrich Klaasen and Hardik Pandya take the cherry. Klaasen may have had a below-par tournament, but his knock in the final will always send shivers to the Indian cricket fans. Whereas Hardik Pandya has been the best all-rounder in the tournament by a mile.
Spinner – Rashid Khan
Finally, talking about bowling, this is an area that has n number of bowlers competing for the 4 spots that we have. It’s the most difficult area to choose the players from, and there can be a lot of subjectivity and bias while selecting the players for this category. While we will come to the top 4 bowlers in this category, we will select a mix of 3 pacers and 1 spinner.
Selecting the spinner first, we have four options to choose from in this form of Rishad Hossain, Kuldeep Yadav, Tabraiz Shamsi, Kuldeep Yadav, and Adam Zampa. Now, Kuldeep and Shamsi have been superb in the Super 8 stage, but they didn’t play the Group Stage, thus their selection doesn’t seem viable. Zampa has been decent with 13 wickets from 7 games. But overall, it is the fight between Rashid Khan and Rishan Hossain for the best spinner spot.
Both, Rishad and Rashid have been excellent in the T20 World Cup 2024. Both have 14 wickets to their name in the World Cup. While Rashid took 8 innings, Rishad did it in just 7 innings. But what separates Rashid from Rishad is the economy rate. While Rishad has an ER of 7.8, Rashid has been far superior at 6.2. In addition, Rashid has produced two match-winning spells, thus helping his team qualify for the Semi-finals.
Pacers – Anrich Nortje, Jasprit Bumrah & Fazalhaq Farooqi
Now, coming to the pacers, there’s again fierce competition to choose the 3 pacers. If we talk about the two best pacers, look no other than Jasprit Burmah and Fazalhaq Farooqi. While Farooqi is the leading wicket-taker at 17, Bumrah has been almost unplayable this season with 15 wickets at a mind-blowing ER of 4.2. It’s difficult to look beyond these two when it comes to the best pacers.
Now, for the third pacer, there’s a fierce battle between Arshdeep Singh, Naveen Ul-haq, and Anrich Nortje. All three have been excellent this World Cup, but what Nortje achieved is exemplary. The control that Nortje displayed throughout the World Cup is commendable. Courtesy of his tight line and length, he gave away runs at an economy rate of 5.7; second-best among the top 20 pacers. In addition, his 15 wickets are leveled with Bumrah, thus showing his effectiveness for SA.
