Team India Official Squad and Players List for T20 World Cup 2024

Rohit Sharma appointed as the Captain as we look at the official squad and players list for Team India for the T20 World Cup 2024. 

The ICC had set April 30 as the deadline for all teams to announce the provisional squad for the upcoming edition of T20 World Cup 2024, and with that, the BCCI on April 30 announced the official squad list for Team India. As expected, a total of 15 players have been selected for the squad with Rohit Sharma at the helm and Hardik Pandya as his deputy. Analyzing the squad, Team India have selected a total of 4 pure batters, 2 wicket-keepers, 4 all-rounders, 2 spinners, and 3 pacers in the squad.

Amidst the ongoing debate on the underperforming players in the Indian Premier League, the BCCI has ignored the same for a few experienced players like Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Arshdeep Singh, and Mohammed Siraj. However, the same can’t be said about Rinku Singh, who has been blatantly ignored for his bad form in IPL, despite his outstanding performance on the International stage.

Important to note that, this is merely a provisional squad, and BCCI can as well change the squad before the May, end deadline to submit the final squad. While changes are definitely possible, it doesn’t seem BCCI may change the squad, unless for injury issues. Other than the selected 15, BCCI has kept Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Avesh Khan, and Khaleel Ahmed among traveling reserves.

Change of Strategy

If we recollect, the BCCI has switched to a completely new strategy post the 2022 T20 World Cup debacle. It felt like BCCI has finally moved on from the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul with Hardik Pandya donning the captaincy duties. But only a few months before the World Cup, BCCI decided to switch back to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the T20 World Cup 2024.

If we compare the 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cup squad to that of the 2024 T20 World Cup squad, as many as 10 players are repeating in the last three World Cups. From the previous T20 World Cup, we have only Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mohammed Siraj as the new players being added to the squad.

Overall, If we talk about the best playing 11 for Team India for the T20 World Cup 2024, we can see Rohit Sharma opening the innings with Virat Kohli with Suryakumar Yadav at 3. Shivam Dube and Rishabh Pant can play at 4 and 5, and Hardik and Jadeja shall be the finishers. Meanwhile, In terms of bowlers, we can see Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep leading the bowling with Siraj and Arshdeep as the other two bowlers.

Backups

Overall, BCCI has selected a squad with appropriate backups. For example, we have Shivam Dube as the backup for Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel as the backup for Ravindra Jadeja. Meanwhile, In the spin department, we have Yuzvendra Chahal as the backup for Kuldeep Yadav. Whereas Mohammed Siraj is the backup for Bumrah and Arshdeep.

The 2024 T20 World Cup begins on June 2 with India’s first match being scheduled on June 5 against Ireland. India then play Pakistan on June 9th, USA on June 12. Whereas India shall play the final group stage match on June 15 against Canada.
