IPL 2025 Auction: One Confirmed Player Each Team will Retain

Virat Kohli, the confirmed player from Royal Challengers Bengaluru as we look at one player that each team will definitely retain for IPL 2025 Mega Auction.

The current edition of the Indian Premier League, the IPL 2024 is going to be the last edition of the current phase of the tournament before it moves to the Mega Auction. Like 2022, where teams were allowed to retain a total of four players, the 2025 IPL Mega Auction will witness a similar retention policy, the details of which are not known yet.

In the 2022 IPL Mega Auction, BCCI had given the teams an option to retain a maximum of four players including a maximum of two Overseas players. The four players can have a combination of 3 Indians + 1 Overseas or 2 Indians + 2 Overseas players. However, teams could also retain fewer players or none depending on their strategy.

The BCCI hasn’t disclosed what the retention rules will be for this. But one thing that we are almost certain about is we will see all teams retaining players this time. While the number of player retentions may be unknown as yet, how about we take a look at one player that each team is confirmed to retain for IPL 2025?

IPL 2025 Mega Auction – One Confirmed Retain Player for Each Team

Punjab Kings – Shashank Singh

Starting with the Punjab Kings, the team doesn’t have a lot of options that they can confidently say they would like to retain. Retaining more players means spending more purse, and Ideally, they don’t have such quality players to give high price. But the case isn’t the same with uncapped players. If they are sure to retain one player, it will be uncapped Shashank Singh, who has redeemed himself and the PBKS Team in IPL 2024. Apart from Shashank, Ashutosh Sharma will most likely get retained too.

Gujarat Titans – Shubman Gill

Talking about the Gujarat Titans team, it seems a no-brainer as Shubman Gill will be the first name on paper when it comes to retentions for Gujarat Titans. Gill is the Captain of the GT squad, and has already shown he is one of the best batters in the Indian Premier League. Other than Shubman Gill, GT will also retain Rashid Khan and Mohammed Shami for sure.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru – Virat Kohli

If we talk about the Royal Challengers Bengaluru team, one name that is synonymous with the franchise, it is that of Virat Kohli. Kohli has not only been the only player to have represented a single franchise since 2008, but has also been the legend of the game. The 2024 year seems no different with Kohli already being among the runs. With Kohli as the confirmed retained player, Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green, and Mohammed Siraj shall be the other three players that the RCB team may retain.

Delhi Capitals – Rishabh Pant

Talking about Delhi Capitals, one name that Delhi Capitals will definitely retain is Rishabh Pant. Pant, who missed the 2023 season due to injury due to an accident has made a stunning comeback in the 2024 season. Delhi Capitals shall once again build the team around the captain of the side, Rishabh Pant. Other than Pant, DC shall most likely retain Axar Patel, Mitchell Marsh, and Jake Fraser-McGurk.

Rajasthan Royals – Sanju Samson

Ever since Sanju Samson became the captain of the Rajasthan Royals team, the graph has only gone upwards for them. With IPL 2025 retentions in mind, Captain Sanju Samson shall once again be the first name to get retained. Sanju has done exceedingly well as Captain as well as player, so that leaves no room for debate. While Sanju Samson will definitely get retained, RR shall also most likely retain Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jos Buttler, and Riyan Parag.

Mumbai Indians – Hardik Pandya

Coming to Mumbai Indians, this is one franchise that will see the biggest headache in terms of their player retentions for IPL 2025. There are many stalwarts in the team, and pointing out one single player is extremely difficult. But given MI’s focus on the future, one can safely assume Hardik Pandya shall be the first name on paper. Other than Hardik, MI shall most likely retain Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Tim David. Unfortunately, it seems the end of Rohit Sharma and Mumbai Indians’ glorious partnership, at least before the Auction.

Lucknow Super Giants – KL Rahul

Coming to Lucknow Super Giants, one can without a doubt say that KL Rahul, the IPL legend will be the first name on paper to get retained for IPL 2025. KL Rahul is one of the biggest names in the IPL currently, and has done exceedingly well, year on year. With KL Rahul as the confirmed retention, LSG shall also retain Mayank Yadav, Quinton de Kock, and Nicholas Pooran.

Chennai Super Kings – Ruturaj Gaikwad

Coming to the most successful franchise in IPL history, we should finally see the departure of MS Dhoni, the Captain and G.O.A.T. player. For 17 years MS Dhoni has been associated with the IPL, while spending 15 years at CSK. But it finally seems time for MS Dhoni to bid adieu to IPL. With MS Dhoni not there, Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad shall be the first name that CSK shall retain for IPL 2025. Other than Ruturaj, CSK shall most likely retain Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, and Matheesha Pathirana.

Kolkata Knight Riders – Sunil Narine

Kolkata Knight Riders is another franchise like Mumbai Indians that will face the biggest headache in terms of player retention. There are so many quality players with them, and they will face a big headache in terms of player retentions. While KKR will definitely see multiple retentions, if we have to point out one name, it will be Sunil Narine. The MVP of the 2024 season, and by miles should be the first name on paper for KKR. Other than Narine, KKR shall mostly retain Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, and Shreyas Iyer.

Sunrisers Hyderabad  – Heinrich Klaasen

Finally, talking about the Sunrisers Hyderabad team, they have been doing pretty well in the 2024 season. There is no doubt that SRH is an Overseas players-focused franchise, and they might find it difficult to retain more than two Overseas players. But one name that should be on not just SRH’s list, but across all teams, it is Heinrich Klaasen. Klaasen is the best T20 finisher in the world, and has done amazingly well in the IPL. Other than Klaasen, SRH shall mostly retain Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma.
