IPL 2024: Ranking All 10 Teams Basis their Best Openers
KKR and SRH, the standouts as we look at the ranking of the current best openers of each team for IPL 2024.
The IPL 2024 has redefined T20 cricket this season with 200 and even 250+ runs being scored with ease. While one can argue that impact player has kind of changed the mindset of all batters, the major role has been played by the pitches that are being offered. With some unreal striking being down by the batters, it is the openers that have been the most belligerent ones this season.
Barring a few teams like Lucknow Super Giants, Gujarat Titans, and Chennai Super Giants, almost every other team has one or the other opener that played with freedom, and tried to dominate the bowlers. With us already at the end of 60 matches, we already know who the current best openers for each team are. So, how about we take a look at the ranking of each team basis their best openers for IPL 2024?
IPL 2024 Openers Ranking for Each Team
#10 – Punjab Kings
Starting with number 10, we have PBKS with Jonny Bairstow and Prabsimran Singh as their best openers. It has been a decent season so far for PBKS openers with Bairstow scoring 284 runs from 10 innings and Prabsimran scoring 257 runs from 12 innings. While the numbers are decent, they seem underwhelming considering the competition from other team openers.
#9 – Mumbai Indians
Number 9 sees Mumbai Indians with Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan as their best openers. If we talk about their performance, Rohit started well, but has been below average in the last 3-4 matches. Rohit so far has 330 runs from 12 innings. Meanwhile, Kishan has been a disappointment this season with only 266 runs from 12 innings.
#8 – Lucknow Super Giants
At number 8, we have Lucknow Super Giants with KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock as their best openers. KL Rahul has been decent this season unlike the previous season, but de Kock has been a disappointment. While KL Rahul has 460 runs from 12 innings, De Kock has only 238 runs from 10 innings. Surprisingly, both have their strike rates in the 130s, which hasn’t been the flavor this season.
#7 – Delhi Capitals
At number 7, we have Delhi Capitals with Jake Fraser-Mcgurk and Abhishek Porel as their best openers. Compared to PBKS, Porel has almost the same numbers as Bairstow with 267 runs to his name from 10 innings. But Fraser-McGurk has been a revelation this season having scored 309 runs from just 7 innings at a strike rate of 236.
#6 – Rajasthan Royals
Coming to number 6, we have Rajasthan Royals with Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal as their best openers. The rank might surprise you as both are quality openers, but performance-wise, both haven’t been up to the mark. While Buttler has 338 runs from 10 innings, Jaiswal has 320 runs from 11 innings. Both are not even on the top 10 run-getters, and that’s where they lose the ranking.
#5 – Chennai Super Kings
Talking about number 5, we have Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane from CSK. Talking about both openers, Ruturaj Gaikwad has been fantastic as always with one more 500+ runs season. But Rahane has been a disappointment. He has so far managed only 208 runs from 10 innings with a strike rate of 123.
#4 – Gujarat Titans
Coming to number 4, we have Gujarat Titans assuming Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan as their best openers. Now, Sudharsan isn’t GT’s first-choice opener, but has mostly played that role in the absence of Wriddhiman Saha. Overall, both Gill and Sudharsan have been good so far with 400+ runs for Gill and 500+ runs for Sudharsan. Both have always played quicker with strike rates in excess of 140+.
#3 – Royal Challengers Bengaluru
For number 3, we have Royal Challengers Bengaluru with Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis as their best openers. Now, there is no doubt that Virat Kohli has been the best opener this season with 600+ runs already to his name. But Faf has been decent this season having scored 360 runs from 12 innings, but has a solid strike rate of 170.
#2 – Sunrisers Hyderabad
Now, there is no doubt when it comes to the top 2 Teams when it comes to their openers, but who between KKR and SRH take the cherry spot? Well, all four openers have been terrific, but for the number 2 spot, we have Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma from SRH. Both have been solid as openers but as compared to Narine and Head, they lack variety. Overall, Head and Abhishek have scored 533 and 401 runs respectively.
#1 – Kolkata Knight Riders
Finally, for the cherry spot, we have the KKR team with Phil Salt and Sunil Narine as their best openers. Both have been belligerent this season, while also being consistent. Both have 400+ runs so far with a strike rate of 180+. With KKR almost qualifying for Playoffs, expect these two to have 500+ runs season. Another important point that differentiates them is that before the start of the season, neither Salt nor Narine were expected to open. So, amidst all these, they have done a fantastic job.
